Padang City is the largest city on the west coast of Sumatra island once the capital of the province of West Sumatra , Indonesia . The city has an area of 694.96 km ² with geography bordering the sea but has a hilly terrain which height reaches 1,853 meters above sea level . Based on Aggregate Data Population per sub-district ( DAK2 ) in 2012 , the city had a population of 871 534 souls were dominated by Minangkabau ethnic and majority of people in this city embraced Islam .
Padang history can not be separated from its role as Overseas Minangkabau region , which originated from the fishing village at the mouth of the Batang Arau then developed into a bustling port after the port of entry of the Netherlands under the banner Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie ( VOC ) . Today the city is so set on August 7, 1669 , which is a public upheaval against Pauh and Koto Tangah VOC monopoly . During the Dutch occupation , the city became a center of gold trading , tea , coffee , and spices . Entering the 20th century , coal and cement exports started through Bayur Gulf Harbour .
Currently Padang be center of the economy with the highest number of per capita income in West Sumatra . [ 3 ] In addition , the city also became a center of education and health in the central Sumatra region , due to the existence of a number of universities ( including Andalas University , the oldest college in outside Java ) and health facilities are quite complete . In Indonesian society , the name of the city is widely known as another name for the ethnic Minangkabau , and is also used to refer to those specialties that are generally known as Padang cuisine.
